The Waratah (Telopea speciosissima) is known for its large, vibrant crimson flower head, which can measure up to 15cm across. It's is not just a single flower but is actually made up of many flowers joined into a head. It is the floral emblem of New South Wales and grows in the forest understorey, on sandstone ridges. The name ‘Waratah’ comes from the Eora Aboriginal word 'warada' meaning 'beautiful' or 'seen from afar'. Waratahs grow from a modified stem called a 'lignotuber,' which allows the plant to produce masses of shoots after bush fires.
